Dominion Theatre

The magnificent Dominion Theatre was constructed from the year 1928 to 1929 on the previous site of brewery and funfair. W and T R Milburn designed the theatre. During the opening years, theatre didnít fare well due to economic depression. In the year 1933, part of Gaumont-British cinema chain purchased the theatre to run some of the most popular movies of era. This was quite affordable as well as novel entertainment form and successfully managed to fill 3000 seats. This saved the Art Deco building of the theatre to get completely closed.

Theatre restarted its live performances from the year 1957, as cinema was no more a novel form of entertainment. The Judy Garland Show went on becoming a huge success. Recent year witnessed some great shows with 1983 live pop show by Dolly Parton along with some other spectacular productions such as Grease and Beauty and the Beast.

From the year 1992 to 2001, Dominion theatre was the venue for Royal Variety Show many time. Ben Eltonís musical show We Will Rock You which is based on the music of rock band Queen made its debut in the year 2002 at the Dominion Theatre. The show went on becoming the longest running show in the history of the venue. On 31st May 2014, the show was ended with special performance by Brian May and Roger Taylor.
